Loneliness in Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck In the book Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck loneliness is very significant and a major theme. Many of the characters are very lonely and some of them try to look for an alternative way of life. George and Lennie have each other, Candy has his dog to keep him company, Crooks is lonely because he is black and Curley’s wife was so lonely it killed her. The book Of Mice And Men is set a few miles south of Soledad, which means lonely place. This shows that loneliness is a main theme, by adding in small significant facts like this one interest the reader. You takin’ his pay away from him?† On page 49 George plays solitaire. Solitaire is a game you play on your own so it indicates more loneliness. On page 57 there is an example of Slims opinion. Slim is very respected by all the guys that work on the ranch and his opinions are like law. Slim comments there are not many guys that travel around together and that maybe the whole world is scared of each other. On page 65 George and Slim have a conversation together. Slim is very intelligent and is very interested and curious about what George has to say. George talking to Slim is a change to talking to Lennie because a lot of the time George just explains the dream to Lennie or repeating things that Lennie has forgotten. On page 67 George tells Slim about what happened in Weed. George at first hesitates to tell Slim what happened in Weed. George says â€Å"You wouldn’ tell – no , course you wouldn’.† This shows that George has been so used to not trusting anyone, he has to remind himself about how trusting Slim is. They needed to raise $600 for the farm and candy had the majority of the money. At this time, they were all excited because the dream was becoming a reality. Despite their enormous friendship, if they were to lose each other they would be just like one of the other lonely guys with no one that gives a damn about. I believe that that is their greatest fear of all time, losing their friendship. However, George sometimes feels as though taking care of Lennie as a chore because Lennie can be a real handful. George is always in control. George, unlike other men, has a companion and friend in Lennie. Because of this, Lennie makes George feel special. Cooks is forced to live in solitude because of his skin colour, and being the only Negro man on the reach†¦show more content†¦Although, even the other men don’t want any association with her for fear of getting into trouble with Curley. Curley’s wife even admits to Lennie that she gets very lonely when she befriends him. â€Å"Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely . . . But I cant talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad.† This quote shows that Curleys wife is not allowed to talk to anybody but her husband and she does not like it. In the novel she is described as being a ‘tart’, but it is possible that she acts like a ‘tart’ because she is lonely and desperately wants attention. Candy is the last main example of the characterisation of loneliness. Being old and disabled, Candy is not much use around the ranch anymore, and has been confined to cleaning, which, just like crooks, withholds him from connecting with the other, younger men and thus separating him. Candy’s dog was his only companion, keeping him from being lonely, which was why Candy put off killing it, even though it was the best thing to do. Candy dreaded being a lonely man and is aware that he will soon become useless, so when his dog is shot he invests his hopes in George and Lennies dream, to distract â€Å"I ain’t much good with on’y one hand . . .
